Ryan grew up in California and spent nearly every summer since he was two years old in Yosemite Valley or backpacking through the Sierra. He started climbing while studying geology at the University of California Santa Barbara, making use of the hillside crags and then calling places like Tahquitz, Red Rocks and Tuolumne home. As of 2013, he calls Bend, Oregon home after spending a seven year stint in Seattle. It was there that he spent his time exploring the high routes and peaks of the Cascades and volunteering with Seattle Mountain Rescue, an organization dedicated to saving lives in the Pacific Northwest.
When he’s not climbing, Ryan is traveling the world as a geologist mapping the seafloor and chasing down his two young kids, Miles and Ellis.
